HIV/AIDS notifications in Korea, 2019

Abstract
In Korea, the number of notified new HIV infection cases has increased to 1,222 in 2019 (1,206 in 2018). Among the total cases recorded, males accounted for 1,111 cases (90.9%) and females accounted for 111 of the cases (9.1%). In addition, the 20-29-year-old age group accounted for the highest percentage of cases 35.8% (438 cases), followed by the 30-39-year-old age group, and the 40-49-year-old age group. In terms of HIV detection, 753 cases (61.6%) were detected in hospitals and 376 cases (30.3%) were detected in public health centers. This report found that to confirm the cause of illness in medical institutions was the most common reason to take HIV test, accounting for 35.9% (332 cases). The 99.8% of respondents answered their route of transmission as ¡°sexual contact.¡±
This report recommended The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) to strengthen HIV prevention,
diagnosis and treatment policies targeting people living with HIV, younger age groups and high-risk groups. In addition, the
reported concluded that the KCDC, as part of the international healthcare community, should continue its efforts to end the
AIDS epidemic by 2030.
